Managing channel partners without commission disputes

Most partner disputes come from two unanswered questions: whose buyer is it, and when is commission due? Answer both in writing.

Where disputes come from

Channel partners are an extension of your sales team that you do not employ. They work with several developers at once and will give their best buyers to whoever is easiest to work with and pays on time. Almost every dispute comes from an unclear rule about lead ownership or about when commission becomes payable.

Onboard properly

Treat onboarding as the start of a business relationship, with a short checklist.

  • Firm details, registration and tax documents on file.
  • A named person on your side who owns the relationship.
  • The projects the partner is cleared to sell.
  • The commission terms, shared in writing.

Write a lead-registration rule and stick to it

Decide what counts as a partner’s lead and for how long. A common approach: the partner registers the buyer’s name and phone number before or at the first site visit; the registration is valid for a fixed number of days; if the buyer already exists in your system from another source within that window, the earlier record stands.

Whatever rule you choose, apply it automatically. A system that checks the phone number at registration and timestamps it removes most arguments before they start.

Make commission a calculation, not a negotiation

Publish slabs by project and by volume, and state the event that makes commission payable – for example a percentage of the price received, or registration of the agreement. Calculate it from the booking record so the partner can see the same numbers you do.

Pay on a calendar

Partners remember late payments for a long time. Fix a payout cycle, show each partner what is approved and what is pending and why, and pay on the date. Predictability matters more to most partners than a slightly higher rate.

Review who is actually active

A list of five hundred partners usually contains thirty who bring real business. Review leads, site visits and bookings by partner every month, spend your time on the active ones, and find out why the rest stopped.
